Aesthetic Dental Transformations

In addition to treating periodontal conditions such as gum disease, did you know that your periodontist can improve and enhance the appearance of your smile with cosmetic procedures and dental surgery? Using a variety of tools and techniques, including soft tissue lasers, your periodontist can remove excessive gingival tissue, contour the shape of soft oral tissues to create a uniform look, surgically place gum grafts when necessary, and replace missing teeth with dental implants.

Using a variety of tools and techniques, including soft tissue lasers, your periodontist can remove excessive gingival tissue, contour the shape of soft oral tissues to create a uniform look, surgically place gum grafts when necessary, and replace missing teeth with dental implants.

Some patients experience “gummy smiles” related to an overgrowth of unnecessary gingival (gum) tissue. In some cases, excessive gum tissue can cover more of the tooth than necessary and produce an unattractive looking smile. The most common method to remove excessive gum tissue involves using a soft tissue laser. Soft tissue lasers have many applications in medicine, typically offer faster post-operative healing times, and promote patient comfort. Removing excessive and unnecessary gum tissue does not harm oral health when done properly.

Other patients may have lost gum tissue to periodontal disease or dental injury where the roots of their teeth may be exposed. When these abnormalities occur, your periodontist can reshape the gum line by grafting gingival tissue where needed to produce a uniform and attractive smile with enough gum tissue to protect teeth and bone.

Another common cosmetic and restorative procedure available at your periodtonist’s office is the placement of dental implants. Rather than using removable prosthetics to address tooth loss, a dental implant replaces a missing tooth permanently. Made from an artificial crown and a titanium rod, the rod is surgically placed into the jawbone while the manmade crown fills the empty tooth socket. Crowns of dental implants can be made from natural looking materials, such as porcelain or porcelain fused to metal, so that replacement teeth appear natural and discreet.
