Gum disease occurs in stages, and the symptoms associated with each stage become more severe as the condition progresses.
When periodontitis develops, pockets can form between the gums and the teeth. While healthy gums are securely attached to the teeth, the bacteria that cause gum disease can attack and destroy the soft tissue and underlying bone that hold the teeth in place.
A periodontist determines which treatment will be most effective for a patient’s gum disease based in part on the symptoms that are present.
That process fuels a vicious cycle. As the pockets get larger, they can harbor even more bacteria, which can cause even more damage. If left untreated, this issue can ultimately lead to tooth loss.

When pockets have formed between the gums and the teeth, the periodontist may recommend a type of dental surgery that will reduce the size of those pockets. This procedure may be necessary when the pockets become too deep to be cleaned using normal home oral hygiene habits in combination with professional cleaning techniques.
In the pocket reduction dental surgery, the periodontist will pull back the gum tissue to clear out any bacteria found underneath. Then, the gum tissue is re-attached to the tooth. If necessary, the bone or tooth underneath may be smoothed over to reduce any rough spots where bacteria might collect.
This procedure takes place in an outpatient setting, and the patient is generally able to resume normal activities within a few days.
If you do undergo a pocket reduction procedure, be sure to discuss a plan for aftercare with your periodontist. You may be able to prevent a recurrence of gum disease with a thorough oral hygiene routine at home in combination with regular check-ups and cleanings at your dentist’s office.
