The implant is surgically placed within the jawbone, so sufficient bone and healthy tissue in the target region of the mouth are essential to success. It is also essential that the gums and surrounding teeth be kept healthy after the dental implants are placed. The periodontist will instruct patients on an individual basis, but the average dental implant recipient is instructed to have the implants checked at least twice a year.
The dental implant serves the same purpose that natural tooth roots serve, anchoring the tooth within the jawbone and reinforcing the importance of that jawbone to the body. When a tooth is missing and not replaced with an implant or similar treatment, the jawbone and gum tissue begins receding over time. Without a tooth present, that portion of the bone and tissue appears less significant to the body as a whole. The placement of a dental implant, however, can often prolong the life of the bone and tissue. If sufficient bone or tissue is lacking when the implant is placed, a bone graft, tissue graft, and/or similar treatments can help reinforce the dental implant and surrounding structures.
Just as gums can become inflamed or diseased if not properly cared for, the gum tissue surrounding a dental implant can suffer if oral hygiene techniques are insufficient. Daily flossing and at least twice-daily brushing with proper technique and oral hygiene products can keep the teeth and gums healthy and clean. Seeing a general dentist twice a year for professional cleanings and checkups will help catch early signs of problems such as gum disease.
