Sedation Dentistry: Relax and Take the Edge Off

When it comes to receiving dental and oral healthcare, many patients experience anxiety at just the thought of receiving treatment or attending an appointment. In fact, dental phobias are quite common. Fortunately, when receiving treatment at our practice, our periodontist takes extra steps to ensure patient relaxation by offering sedation dentistry.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves a few different methods but the end goal is the same: To help patients feel relaxed and at ease. One of the oldest and safest forms of sedation dentistry involves administering nitrous oxide gas through a nasal mask. Used for over a century, this mild form of sedation produces feelings of euphoria and can relieve discomfort. Another common method for helping patients feel at ease is the use of mild prescription drugs that have a tranquilizing effect. In most cases, this type of medicine comes from a particular family of drugs called benzodiazepines such as Valium or Xanax. This medication is especially useful for patients who have moderate anxiety and/or will require stillness during their treatment.

How do sedative medications work?

Normally administered orally, and in some cases intravenously, sedative medications work on particular receptors in the brain that release hormones and neurotransmitters to promote feelings of tranquility or sleepiness. These medications are specifically formulated to diminish anxiety and panic while also aiding in relaxation. Depending on each patient’s needs, our team will determine the best medication and dosage.

How do I know if sedation dentistry is right for me?

The only way to be sure if sedation dentistry is right for you is to discuss this option with our periodontist. When determining if a patient would benefit from sedatives, our periodontist will take medical history, medication allergies, and overall health into consideration. If you have difficulty remaining still for treatments or have dental-related anxiety, be sure to bring these concerns up with a member of our team.
