Treating Gum Disease May Improve Overall Health

Over the years, research has linked gum disease to overall health—especially systemic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Some research suggests that the bacteria present in periodontal disease can enter the bloodstream and may attach to plaque in the arteries. Studies also show that patients with gum disease have an increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and many other cardiovascular ailments. Our periodontist offers thorough gum disease treatments to help improve oral health and overall wellness.

Gum Disease and Treatment

Gum disease causes the periodontal tissue to become infected and inflamed. Commonly caused by inadequate oral hygiene and tartar buildup, gum disease is also caused by hormonal fluctuations, genetic predispositions, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes or dry mouth.

A common treatment method for gum disease involves deep prophylaxis, a process that is very similar to a dental cleaning except that the innermost areas of the gums are accessed to remove the infection and clean away affected tissue.

Periodontal Therapy May Improve Heart Health

According to a recent article published by the Dental Tribune, a study was performed on Aboriginal peoples in Australia, a demographic that has high risks for both heart disease and gum disease. The study found that after receiving periodontal therapy, the thickness of the artery walls was measured. A significant number of participants saw thinning of the arterial walls after periodontal treatment.  With further research, it is possible to determine whether periodontal treatment can reduce cholesterol levels and ultimately reduce the risk of heart disease. The results of the researched conducted in Australia is promising in regards to better understanding the connection between hearth health and gum disease in the future.
