Treatment Options for an Uneven Gum Line

Gum tissue can appear uneven for many reasons … you may have inherited a gummy smile; you may be suffering with gum recession; or you may just have irregular gum lines that can be easily corrected. Gum treatment is often performed through a periodontist with great success.

Uneven gum tissue can be attributed to more than just genetics. Gum tissue can recede due to incorrect brushing; tobacco use; a poor diet; teeth grinding; a malocclusion; gum disease … there are many reasons you may not be pleased with your smile because of your gums.

There are surgical options to reduce excessive gum tissue or to reshape gums.

Gum contouring surgery is used to correct gums to provide teeth with a more even appearance. Although often completed for cosmetic purposes, gum contouring may be required due to gum recession (which could lead to dental decay and/or gum disease) or excessive gum tissue that covers too much of a tooth’s surface. Contouring can be performed on one or numerous teeth.

A gum lift that is completed using laser technology can be performed quickly and with little to no discomfort for the patient. Healing time is minimal; an over the counter analgesic is usually sufficient to manage any discomfort.

Once gum surgery has been performed, your periodontist may recommend eating soft foods for a few days; in most cases the patient can resume their normal schedule within a day or two. Always follow the instructions given for brushing and flossing.

Following treatment, additional cosmetic work may be desired … A tooth colored bonding material can be applied to enhance the appearance of teeth. Or in some cases, the patient may opt for porcelain veneers. These are very thin tooth colored shells that can be cemented to the front of stained, uneven, chipped, or misshapen teeth. Whatever cosmetic option is selected following any kind of gum surgery, your dental provider will want to make sure gum tissue is thoroughly healed before completing treatment.
