What is a dental implant?

You’ve lost one or several teeth and have a sinking feeling that your life is forever changed. But that does not need to be the case. A meeting to discuss dental surgery in our Dallas office will open the door to options that you might not know exist.

One of the best options available is a dental implant, and whether or not you are replacing one or several teeth, this procedure offers you the closest thing to your original teeth.

Basically a dental implant is a small device that looks like a screw. During this dental procedure, your dental provider will place the implant in your gum tissue. The implant itself is made of a titanium type material giving it strength and stability. While the implant heals, which typically takes four to six months, the implant adheres to the bone. Once the healing process has completed, the implant has become a strong base that will act much like the root of your natural tooth.

Any healthy person whose bone growth has matured is a candidate for dental implants. Both your dental health as well as your overall health is considered for the dental implant procedure. Another consideration is whether or not tobacco is used. The success rate for tobacco users is not as high, so if you are contemplating dental implants, it is wise to quit smoking before dental implantation.

Once your periodontist has determined that your healing is completed and the implant has successfully grafted to the bone, the implant process is completed by the addition of the final restoration.  A final restoration is generally in the form of a crown for a single restoration or a bridge or denture when several teeth are involved.

The periodontist will develop the final restoration taking the shape and shade of your natural teeth and match them precisely making your implant virtually undetectable.

In addition to the aesthetic advantages of dental implants, when teeth are placed in those open spaces the ability to speak, eat the foods you love, and laugh are enjoyed once again.

Taking care of your dental implant is as easy as taking care of your own teeth. Brushing twice daily and flossing daily are excellent hygiene habits to adopt. And visiting your dentist for a professional cleaning and exam twice per year will allow you to enjoy your new dental implant for many years to come.
