When Can I Return to Work After Implant Surgery?

During the recovery phase following any surgical procedure, rest, relaxation, and nutrition are the keys to proper healing. The recovery period after placing dental implants is no exception.  Although you may not be able to see the evidence from the outside, your body has lots of work to do in order to rebound from the demands of the procedure as your gums and jawbone are also becoming acquainted with your new tooth.

The surgical procedure for your dental implants is generally very smooth and predictable, but should never be taken for granted. Following your surgery, you’ll want to ensure that your actions don’t stand in the way of the healing process, and you will certainly want to look towards your implant dentist for guidance and advice for the desired outcome.

After allowing at least a day for rest and relaxation, most patients find that they are comfortable enough to return to work very soon. It is important to ease back into your normal routine as gently as possible, though, and any form of extreme physical exertion should be avoided for several days if possible.

To determine how quickly you can get back to work, ask yourself a few questions:

Do you have enough energy to move around your home and complete normal tasks without feeling groggy or dizzy? The effects of the surgical anesthesia can leave most patients feeling a little drowsy or sleepy for several hours or for a full day. Before returning to work, make sure that the sedatives and anesthesia have worn off completely.

Are you able to travel to work safely? Your implant dentist may have prescribed pain medications that should not be taken if you are required to drive a vehicle or operate mechanical equipment.

Has the bleeding stopped? It is critical that the blood at the surgical site be allowed to clot completely in order to move forward in the healing process. It’s best to relax comfortably until the bleeding has stopped.
