Osseous surgery, also known as pocket reduction surgery, is the surgical procedure that enables us to access the hard-to-reach surfaces of the tooth roots in order to remove calcified tartar and colonized bacteria.  The goal of this surgery is to reduce and reshape the pockets in the gums and bone that surround the teeth.

Why is Osseous Surgery Recommended?

Periodontal disease destroys the bone and gum tissue, preventing them from fitting snugly around your teeth. As a result, deep pockets are formed, encouraging the growth and colonization of destructive bacteria. In time, these areas can become too deep to be accessed with your toothbrush, floss, or even a ‘normal’ dental cleaning. Without advanced periodontal treatments like osseous surgery, these pockets and the destruction that they cause can lead to severe bone deterioration and tooth loss.

If the pockets between the gums and the teeth have become too deep to be properly managed with your daily homecare regimen and professional cleanings, the pocket reduction procedure is generally recommended.

An Overview of the Procedure

This surgical procedure is performed in our modern and well-equipped office, and Dr. Tomlin will administer local anesthetics for maximum comfort. During the procedure, the gum tissue will be gently pulled back so that the affected tooth roots are revealed. Deeply embedded tartar and diseased tissue will be removed and the damaged surfaces of the surrounding bone can be smoothed or reshaped as needed to eliminate and reduce the depths of the pockets. The gum tissue will then be secured in a healthy position with sutures and/or surgical dressings so that the healing process can begin.

Is Osseous Surgery Right for You?

Eliminating the bacteria near the gumline may not be enough to sufficiently prevent or control recurrent periodontal disease.

If deeper pockets are preventing you (or your dental hygienist) from thoroughly accessing all areas of your mouth, reducing them can be very beneficial. The reduction of periodontal pockets, combined with good daily oral hygiene and regularly scheduled professional maintenance, will increase the likelihood that you will keep your natural teeth for the rest of your life. Improving your oral health with osseous surgery will also decrease your risk for the numerous health problems that are associated with periodontal disease.
