Tooth loss is a multi-faceted problem, including the psychological stress of losing a part of your body. It’s a problem that packs a major blow to your appearance and your self-esteem. Even one missing tooth can instantly change your appearance and cause the remaining teeth to shift out of alignment.
Tooth loss can impair your ability to chew certain foods, and that’s a limitation that can affect your overall health.
Whether you are planning to have a tooth pulled or you have already lost a tooth, any or all of these concerns must be considered as you explore your tooth-replacement options. In fact, these are the challenges that make implant dentistry so very appealing for millions of patients. With a single restoration, virtually all of the obstacles associated with tooth loss can be addressed and the success rate for dental implants is unparalleled!

For example, the progressive loss of bone density and volume is a common occurrence once a tooth has been removed. Known as bone atrophy, the jawbone will begin to shrink considerably during the months and years after an extraction. This problem can be compounded for those patients who have suffered from periodontal disease, a chronic infection that also contributes to bone loss.
Clinical studies have shown that the only way to prevent or stop bone atrophy is with direct stimulation. In a healthy mouth, the tooth root will naturally provide that stimulation. In the absence of the natural teeth, dental implants will serve as artificial tooth roots. With the implants in place, the bone will receive the necessary stimulation to stop deterioration. Although there are other methods for replacing missing teeth; such as bridges and dentures, the implant is the only available solution that extends below the gumline to sustain the underlying bone.
If you could replace your lost tooth with a solution that looks okay when you smile, why would you be concerned about bone loss below the surface? Remember that the jawbone provides a foundation which supports your remaining teeth and also gives your facial profile a natural appearance. As the bone deteriorates, you can expect to eventually experience unattractive consequences such as sunken jowls and thinner lips.
