Enhanced Oral Cancer Screening Technology: OralID®
OralID® uses a proven, optically based technology called “fluorescence technology.” OralID’s fluorescence technology uses a blue light (435–460 nm) that helps clinicians identify oral mucosal abnormalities such as oral cancer and pre-cancer. The other medical applications of fluorescence technology include highlighting abnormalities of the GI tract, cervix, lung, and skin.
Our periodontists use this oral cancer screening device, in an effort to identify oral cancers in their earliest stages. Currently, up to 70% of oral cancers are found in late stages (stage III, IV), resulting in a 5-year survival rate of less than 50%. OralID has the ability to “highlight” these abnormalities in much earlier stages, before abnormalities are visible to the naked eye, in turn increasing the 5-year survival rate up to 80-90%.
