Making Upper Dental Implants Possible with Advanced Bone Grafting

When it comes to placing a dental implant, one of the most important factors for long-term success is having enough strong, healthy bone in your jaw to surround the implant. In some areas—especially the back of the upper jaw—bone loss and the anatomy of your sinuses can make it difficult to place implants without additional support.

At Park Cities Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, our board-certified periodontists specialize in sinus lift procedures (also known as sinus augmentation), which are used to safely and effectively rebuild lost bone in the upper jaw. This allows us to place dental implants in areas that otherwise would not have enough support—and help you restore your smile with confidence.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift is a specialized type of bone grafting procedure that increases the height of bone in the upper jaw by lifting the sinus membrane and placing graft material underneath. This added bone creates a strong foundation where dental implants can be placed securely.

Our periodontists use advanced 3D imaging (CBCT scans) to evaluate your unique anatomy and carefully plan the procedure. The goal is to safely create the necessary space and bony support for implants that will last for many years to come.

Why Is a Sinus Lift Needed?

The upper back teeth (molars and premolars) sit just below the maxillary sinus—an air-filled cavity located behind your cheeks and above your upper jaw. When these teeth are lost or extracted, the surrounding bone begins to shrink over time. In many cases, the sinus floor gradually drops down into the space where the roots used to be, reducing the amount of bone available to hold a dental implant securely.

If your jawbone has lost too much height or density in this area, a sinus lift can help. By gently raising the sinus membrane and adding bone graft material, we can help your body regenerate enough bone to support a dental implant—restoring both the strength and structure of your upper jaw.

Types of Sinus Lift Procedures

Depending on how much bone is present and how much additional height is needed, we use one of two main techniques:

1

Lateral Window Sinus Lift (Traditional Approach)

This is typically recommended when there is very little bone remaining (usually less than 5 mm). In this procedure, a small opening is made in the side of the upper jawbone, the sinus membrane is gently lifted, and bone graft material is placed beneath it.

  • In advanced cases, this is done as a separate procedure about 6 months before implant placement to allow the graft to fully integrate.
  • In moderate cases, the implant may be placed at the same time as the grafting, which can shorten the overall treatment time.
2

Crestal (Vertical) Sinus Lift

Used when only a small amount of additional bone height is needed, this less invasive approach is done at the same time as implant placement. Specialized tools are used to access the sinus through the implant site itself, gently lifting the membrane and inserting a small amount of bone graft material directly beneath it. This technique minimizes healing time and discomfort and is ideal when the bone loss is minimal.

What to Expect During Your Sinus Lift Procedure

Before we begin, we will take a detailed 3D CBCT scan to evaluate your sinus anatomy, remaining bone volume, and implant goals. From there, we will discuss the treatment options that are best suited to your needs—including the type of sinus lift, timing, and sedation preferences.

The procedure is typically performed under IV sedation to ensure you feel relaxed and comfortable. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how little discomfort they feel afterward.

Following the procedure, patients will receive a written post-operative care guide and a full walkthrough of next steps before leaving the office. Our team is always available to address any questions or concerns throughout the process.

How Long Is the Healing Time?

The healing timeline depends on the type of sinus lift performed:

  • Lateral window sinus lifts usually require 4 to 6 months for the bone to fully mature before implants can be placed.
  • Crestal sinus lifts often allow for implant placement at the same time, with healing taking place over 3 to 4 months as both the implant and graft integrate together.

During your follow-up visits, we will monitor your progress and ensure the graft is healing as expected.

Long-Term Benefits of Sinus Augmentation

  • Creates a solid foundation for dental implants in areas that were previously too thin or fragile
  • Prevents further bone loss in the upper jaw after tooth loss
  • Supports facial structure and improves long-term oral function
  • Increases the chances of implant success and stability over time
  • Allows you to restore chewing function and enjoy your favorite foods again with confidence
