"What would I do if it were my mom in the chair?"

This is the question Dr. Stephanie Bowers has asked herself again and again — first as a student at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, and now, as a board-certified periodontist practicing at Park Cities Periodontics & Implant Dentistry.

It is the ethical backbone of her work, a promise to offer every patient the standard of care she would want for the people she loves most.

In practice, that means never rushing consultations, checking in personally after procedures, and knowing patients by their stories, not just their charts.

Since joining Park Cities Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, Dr. Bowers has helped redefine periodontal care in Dallas. Her warmth and uncompromising standards have earned the trust of hundreds of patients and their families.

From Frightened Patient to Passionate Physician

Dr. Bowers did not come from a family of doctors, but she felt from an early age that medicine was her calling. “I always knew this is what I wanted to do,” she says. “I never wanted anything different.”

Her early dental experiences were not all sunshine and stickers. She remembers being a nervous child in the chair and often dreading going to dental appointments. But what stood out was not the fear. It was the way her providers responded to it.

“My pediatric dentist was the nicest. He made you feel so comfortable. I loved my orthodontist, and the periodontist I saw after I had braces. I was scared, but I was also fascinated by what they were doing.”

Once she settled on dentistry as her path, she quickly found her way to periodontal surgery.  She was inspired by the specialty’s unique blend of medical complexity and surgical precision, as well as its emphasis on the connection between oral and systemic health. Periodontics offered the perfect balance — scientifically rigorous yet deeply personal, with opportunities for both artistry and building meaningful patient relationships.

Finding Her Professional Home

Dr. Bowers had not yet finished her residency when she heard that a respected periodontist in Dallas was looking for an associate. Though she had some time left before graduation, she expressed interest in the position, and soon found herself shadowing Dr. Beth Tomlin.

“It was a really good match,” Dr. Bowers says. “Building a successful practice is not easy, but she is smart, she is calm with patients, and she puts a high level of care into everything. We are on the same wavelength about how we want to practice.”

She quickly knew she would found something special. She continued to spend time shadowing at Park Cities Periodontics until she finished residency, and then was finally ready to join the practice.

Today, the two periodontists collaborate frequently, giving patients the benefit of two minds instead of one. That spirit of teamwork extends throughout the practice. “We have built a really compassionate team to make the whole experience as good as it can be,” Dr. Bowers says. “And we keep really high standards. Everyone is striving for the same high level of care and competence.”

When asked to describe the values that define the practice, Dr. Bowers does not hesitate: “Advanced technology. Personalized treatment. Compassionate care. And we are committed — to our patients and to getting things right.”

Meeting You Where You Are

Dr. Bowers understands that walking into a periodontal office can feel intimidating. Maybe you have avoided dental care for years. Maybe you have had bad experiences in the past. Maybe you are nervous about how your treatment might feel.

“Unfortunately, a lot of people have bad experiences when they are young, and that sets the tone for how they see dentistry for the rest of their lives,” she says. “I work intentionally to create a different kind of experience.”

Her patient-first philosophy is no accident, nor is it a lesson learned in a lab or lecture hall.

It is born from her own white-knuckled grip on the pediatric dental chair’s armrests, and from the “mom test” that ensures her patients receive the same attentive, ethical care she would give a family member.

“We tailor the experience based on what the patient needs,” she explains. “If you want to take the exam slowly and need breaks, we do that. We will meet you wherever you are.”

“I worked in a yoga studio during dental school,” Dr. Bowers says. “The teachers used to say, ‘You already did the hardest part — you got here.’ Now I tell patients the same thing. You are in exactly the right place.”

The Mouth-Body Connection

For Dr. Bowers, providing exceptional periodontal care means looking beyond the mouth.

“We do not just treat a disease,” she says. “We treat the whole person. If you do not address what caused the problem in the first place, you are doing the patient a disservice.”

Research continues to show that oral health is not separate from the rest of the body. Gum disease has been linked to systemic inflammation and can worsen conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and autoimmune disorders. Even pregnancy outcomes can be affected by poor oral health.

“You might think your mouth is separate, but it is really the gateway to the rest of your body,” Dr. Bowers explains. “What is happening there can influence your health in ways people often do not realize.”

During consultations, Dr. Bowers assesses a wide range of medical and non-medical factors to build a complete picture of a patient’s health.

When needed, she coordinates with other healthcare providers to ensure her patients receive cohesive, effective care.

“Different people in the dental and medical team will be the quarterback at different times,” she says. “We work really hard to keep everyone on the same page and make things easier and less stressful for the patient.”

Caring for patients so comprehensively naturally leads to something Dr. Bowers treasures about her specialty: long-term relationships. “I have had patients who started with me during my residency and found me again in private practice. I have seen a huge transformation in them, and they have seen me grow too.”

The most rewarding moments come when patients “graduate” or finish their treatment plan. “I am selfishly sad that we will not see them as often, but seeing the patient leave more confident, more comfortable, and healthier than when they started — this is what makes it all worth it.”

Shaping the Future of Periodontal Care

Dr. Bowers is as committed to the future of her field as she is to the patients she sees each day. From her seat on the board of directors of the Dallas County Dental Society, she advocates for high clinical standards, ethical leadership, and stronger collaboration across specialties.

Inside the practice, she embraces innovations like salivary diagnostics, low-radiation CBCT scans, new bone grafting techniques, and advanced implant materials. One area of innovation that particularly excites her is personalized medicine, using a patient’s unique genetics and healing response to optimize the treatment plan from the beginning.

As this field continues to grow, she believes it has the potential to save patients time, money, and stress.

“I am interested in anything that helps us give better and more predictable results,” she says. “If it means less invasive procedures, faster healing, and a more comfortable experience, this is where I want to focus.”

No matter how advanced the tools become or how far the field evolves, her mission stays the same: to offer every patient the highest level of care, and to keep getting better at it, every day.
