Common Dental Emergencies

1

Dental Implant Pain or Swelling

If you have a dental implant that is painful, swollen, or feels loose, it is important to be evaluated as soon as possible. This could indicate peri-implantitis (inflammation or infection around the implant) or other complications that may need urgent treatment to prevent implant failure.

2

Abscesses or Gum Infections

A painful, swollen area on your gums may be a periodontal abscess—a localized infection under your gums that can lead to bone loss or systemic issues if left untreated. These often present with swelling, pain, a bad taste, or a visible lesion on the gum tissue.

3

Post-Op Complications

If you have recently had a tooth extraction, gum graft, or other oral surgery, and you are experiencing unusual bleeding, swelling, or discomfort that is not improving, please contact our office promptly. Complications such as dry socket or infection are uncommon but treatable when caught early.

4

Loose Teeth or Trauma

If a permanent tooth becomes loose due to trauma or infection, especially if there is bleeding around the gumline, it is important to stabilize the tooth as quickly as possible. Trauma to the supporting bone or soft tissues may require periodontal intervention.

5

Sudden Gum Bleeding

Spontaneous, severe gum bleeding, especially when paired with swelling or pain, may point to an acute periodontal infection or systemic disease.

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you are unsure whether your situation may be a dental emergency, we encourage you to contact our office—our team will help you assess your symptoms and determine the appropriate next steps. If it is an issue better handled by your general dentist or another specialist, we will guide you in the right direction.

Here are some things you can do right away:

Rinse with warm salt water to keep the area clean.

Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling or bruising.

Take over-the-counter pain relief, such as ibuprofen (unless contraindicated).

Avoid chewing on the affected area until you can be evaluated.

Bring any broken tooth fragments or dislodged dental work to your appointment.

How We Help

At Park Cities Periodontics & Implant Dentistry, our board-certified periodontists—Dr. Beth Tomlin and Dr. Stephanie Bowers—have extensive training in managing surgical and periodontal emergencies. We use advanced diagnostic tools, such as 3D CBCT imaging, to quickly assess the situation and determine the most effective and minimally invasive treatment options.

Whether you need incision and drainage of an abscess, implant evaluation and management, emergency tooth removal, or treatment for post-op complications, we are equipped to provide expert, attentive care. Sedation options are available for procedures that require it, including IV sedation, nitrous oxide, and local anesthesia, so you can stay comfortable throughout your visit.

Collaborating With Your Dentist

In most emergency cases, we will communicate directly with your general dentist or orthodontist to ensure continuity of care. Our goal is to resolve the issue quickly and preserve the health of your teeth, gums, and jaw—while helping you avoid more invasive treatments down the line.
