All forms of dental surgery, from crown lengthening to dental implants, consist of three distinct steps. In the first, you and your periodontist determine that the surgical procedure is necessary and appropriate. In the second, the surgery is performed using the most effective techniques and current technology. In the third, healing must take place.
The final step is arguably the most important, since no surgical procedure can be considered successful unless it heals properly. As the patient, you carry a significant share of the responsibility in this stage. Understanding the role of oral hygiene after surgery is essential, as your habits can either support or hinder the healing process.
To promote healing, your primary objective is to keep the surgical area as clean as possible. Brush and floss gently after meals and at bedtime, and be mindful of any food particles or plaque that could be lingering anywhere in the mouth. These irritants can trigger an inflammatory response that impairs your body’s ability to recover. The mouth contains a large and varied bacterial population, and an infection in one area can easily spread to a nearby surgical site.
If you have undergone soft tissue grafting or bone grafting, poor oral hygiene can prevent the new tissue from integrating correctly. For procedures like dental implant placement, inadequate plaque control can interfere with the implant fusing properly with the surrounding bone and tissue.
Simple habits make a meaningful difference: rinsing gently after meals, brushing and flossing consistently, and using any oral hygiene products prescribed by your care team. Following your post-operative care instructions closely will keep you comfortable and give your surgery the best possible chance of success.
